Lancaster, Calif. — A pit bull owner whose dogs fatally mauled a woman taking her morning stroll was sentenced Friday to 15 years to life in prison for second-degree murder.

The case against Alex Donald Jackson was one of the few where a dog owner has been charged with murder for failing to control pets they knew were dangerous. He will be eligible for parole after serving 15 years.
....

With the typical life span of a dog being something short of dude's minimum sentence, it's unlikely that he'll be reunited with his beloved Petey and Rex. Oh, that and the fact that they were put down. So sad.

Noise from Detroit Zoo leads to heated debate

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/nois ... e/31244004

This is the second story I've seen recently about neighbors getting pissed off over the noise from the zoo. Most of the commentors are writing that the whiners all knew there was a zoo there when they bought their homes and they should tough it out. Yes, they knew there were animals there. I've known people who've lived near zoos. There are times when all the critters go crazy and make a helluva noise; the monkeys will get into a frenzy or the birds will all get to cawing at each other. Maybe at night an owl won't stop hooting. That's nature and is to be expected. What they didn't sign on for are animatronic dinosaurs with 1000 watt subwoofers broadcasting their roars until windows rattle, or big private parties with valet parking and amplified music. I'm sure nobody in the neighborhood is invited to these events anyway, so why should they have to stay awake at night listening to it? This is not a zoo, it's a theme park, and it doesn't belong in a residential area. The zoo sounds like a really crappy neighbor. They need to get back to the animals.

Windhoek (AFP) - A US hunter who paid $350,000 to kill a black rhinoceros in Namibia successfully shot the animal on Monday, saying that his actions would help protect the critically-endangered species.

Somewhere on YouTube is a vid of a lion actually eating a guy. It's a white guy and to me it looks like a tourist in S outh Africa. Damn lion is chewing on this guy like a dog would hit a rawhide toy. Dunno if he tasted good but the lion was all like "this bald dead white dude is worth my time. " No idea who had the balls to shoot this with an 8mm through the window of their car in the safari park.

One I saw had a German guy outside the car walking up on a group of lounging lions with a movie camera - "okay, do something lion-like now" - and one came up behind him and took him. Then they ate him. It was pretty hard to watch.

..and stupid, very stupid.

This has been on the news repeatedly. In each "ARE SAFARI PARKS SAFE!?!" hyperbolic over dramatic news segment, they mention only in passing the multiple times she and her party (and others injured in similar fashion in various other parks) were warned by the staff and signs all over the place to KEEP THEIR FUCKING WINDOWS CLOSED. So now some wild animal is probably going to be euthanized for being a wild animal and I'm sure lawsuits are going to follow.

Why can't the story just end with; "stupid is painful, don't do what she did...and now for the weather."?

There are two clips of people being devoured by lions in the bush, one looks to be a fake and the other seems to be the real deal. In the first a guy on safari. With his family gets out of the car to shoot a pride of lions with a camera. Another tourist catches the entire incident, from the prat fall when the lion attacks, cuts back to the famy in the car for horrifed reaction shots, lions eating at something, etc. This goes on and on yet no one thinks to honk a car horn or even drive into the lions whoare eating up dear old dad. Fake.

In the other, seen years ago but not since, a lion is clearly eating on a dead guy, working meatoff of the bone. Real IMO because the meal had a human head and face.

An actual tiger gets loose in Packard Plant in Detroit

British photographer David Yarrow booked a two-day photo shoot at Detroit's Packard Plant.

Only problem was, he apparently didn't tell anyone that he was bringing a tiger, two wolves and a bobcat with him.

Pictures of the wild critters amid the rubble of the infamous Packard ruins were making the rounds online today. The animals, trainers and photographers were given the boot about an hour later.

“He asked me if I had a leafblower, and I said I had a weedwhacker, so he told me to bring that.”
Andy Didorosi
But not before the tiger got loose and holed itself up on a fourth-story staircase.

Reaction: Twitterverse roars with laughter over tiger at Packard
"I got a call from a friend who asked me to help them get this tiger out of a staircase," said Andy Didorosi, 28, of Detroit. "He asked me if I had a leafblower, and I said I had a weedwhacker, so he told me to bring that. ... I stopped what I was doing, grabbed my tools and hopped in my truck, because, you know, tiger. ...

"I don't know much about tiger logistics, but we were told to be this huge blue tarp monster with the weedwhacker and try to be scary and make loud noises. That just made him angry. You could say he got tiger rage, so we retreated."

You can watch the harrowing attempt in Didorosi's video here:

The trainers were apparently able to get the tiger safely back into its cage.

Kari Smith, project manager for the Packard Plant Project, said: "We arranged for a photography group of humans to be on site for two days. We never approved any animals being on the site, and we had the matter taken care of in the first hour. We do not condone animals being on the site here, and the shoot was canceled. This is nothing we signed on for."

She added that the animals were not harmed and trainers were on site to handle the critters.

Didorosi said that the local crew helping with the shoot was told only that "models" were being used, not wild animals, and then "this big 'Jurassic Park'-like trailer shows up with all these wild animals."

The Detroit entrepreneur was not happy with Yarrow's bravado.

"People think it's OK to bring super dangerous animals into the city without alerting the authorities because they think people don't care, because they think it's a cesspool and that they can do whatever (they) want," Didorosi said. "That is not cool."

Bringing wild animals into the city without permission appears to violate Section 6-1-3 (a) of the city's ordinances, which says, "It shall be unlawful for a person to own, harbor, keep, or maintain, sell, or transfer any farm animal, or any wild animal, on their premises or at a public place within the city" other than for circuses, zoos, or laboratories. It is unclear yet whether charges will be sought.

Yarrow is a renowned wildlife photographer based in London whose work has been exhibited around the world. The Nikon camera company features him as one of their "Nikon ambassadors" in the United Kingdom. Nikon describes their ambassadors as "some of the most talented visual artists in the business today."

An e-mail to Yarrow's photography website seeking comment was not returned.

Eat a dick.

The rest of the civilized world thinks Detroit is a cesspool because well, it is. How cool said cesspool might be is a matter of opinion.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

Head Lice Now Resistant to Common Meds in 25 States

"We have found 100 percent resistance among 104 lice populations out of 109 we tested"

http://health.usnews.com/health-news/articles/2015/08/18/head-lice-now-resistant-to-common-meds-in-25-states

The referenced article addresses how head lice have developed a genetic resistance to core of OTC louse defense: permethrin. One chemical has been used to purge the little bastards and over time bugs that are resistant have arisen while the susceptible ones have been Darwined out of the gene pool.

The unnerving part of this resistance is that the bug is so damn common. One of my kids came down with a case (miraculously it was contained to the one little girl) despite the fact that we're meticulously clean. What was funny about our daughter's case was that we had just returned home from a night out with another couple and were sitting in our living room when the little girl walks in and declares that she found a bug while brushing her hair. I about levitated out of my chair but the friends were cool: she's a teacher and without batting an eye dove in, did an inspection and concluded "yep, she's got 'em." A trick that I learned from my father and his unsavory work was to keep on hand an arsenal for dealing with whatever crap might inadvertently be brought home, so I dusted off the box of louse shampoo bought years earlier when we first started with kids, and in 30 minutes the entire household had been washed. Then it was on to the nit-picking. How flipping tedious and awful. The tot had very long hair, but mercifully she takes after the dark side of the family so the hair presented at least a little contrast for the tiny eggs which are literally glued to the individual hairs.

Bottom line: anyone with kids, anyone who flies, and anyone who isn't hermetically sealed all day probably has cause to be at least a little worried about the arrival of bad-assed little lice.
