U-M fraternity permanently dissolved for ski-resort rampage

The University of Michigan's Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity has been permanently disbanded by its parent organization for not only wrecking a northern Michigan resort but also in not stepping up and facing the music.

"It is regrettable that these vandals, as well as the officers of the chapter, decided that avoiding personal accountability and/or university sanctions took priority over the welfare of the entire chapter; their lack of cooperation led to the university's withdrawal of recognition of the entire chapter for a four-year period. Sigma Alpha Mu worked in cooperation with university officials and regretfully agreed with their request to close the chapter," executive director Leland Manders wrote in a statement.

"The fraternity's board regrets having to take this action. The action was necessary as a result of: a) the lack of cooperation by those responsible for the damage in not coming forward, b) the chapter officers refusal to identify the members who damaged the hotel property, c) the lack of action to stop the vandalism by bystanders.

Well well well. Good start- now if colleges would just do away with the entire Greek system, that antiquated relic of elitism and exclusion, as a whole.

I can just see the guilty ones-- of course they knew who was involved-- sitting around the ol' frat house when this story broke and coming up with a master plan.... Everybody, just sit tight and keep your yappers shut. Don't say nothing to nobody and this will go away. Brotherhood above accountability. What are they going to do if no one admits anything- disband the chapter? No way!

History-rich MSU not content with just making Final Four

http://www.freep.com/story/sports/colle ... y/25278791

If today is the day it ends for MSU, I'm cool with that. Hell of a run for a team no one expected much of.

From now on, my Final Four will always be three #1 seeds and MSU. Maybe not how it will work every year but history doesn't lie.

I heard on the radio that MSU, with four consecutive bowl wins and four consecutive Sweet 16s, is the premier college athletic program in the country. I told this to the IT guy at work (UM fan who went to ITT Tech) and he went ape-shit about how the school still sucks, blah blah. Whoa dude- chill. Why is it that the Wal-Mart Wolverines are the pissiest?

Deadly fall for U of M student at Nickels Arcade
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -

A University of Michigan student died Friday when he fell through the glass roof of the Nickels Arcade in Ann Arbor, according to police.

The student, Joshua Brigham, of Saugatuk, was a psychology major according to an official at the school.

Police said Brigham climbed up the fire escape to the top of the roughly three-story structure around 2:20 a.m. Friday.

Brigham was taken to an area hospital where he died of injuries suffered in the fall.

I have been in the Nickels Arcade many times to visit the Maison Edwards Tobacco Shoppe. Never once thought about climbing up to walk on the glass roof.

I'm assuming this is one of those "alcohol was involved" situations, given 2:20am on a Friday.

I've been shit-faced, blind drunk and never wanted to do anything that stupid. Granted, I've driven around Detroit in that state, which is probably just as dangerous, but logically, it makes sense.

"I gotta get the fuck home somehow"

vs.

"I'm gonna climb onto this roof and then walk on a pane of glass"

How defense has made Michigan the best team in the Big Ten

When the latest polls came out on Sunday, and Ohio State was still ranked atop the country, I did the same thing a lot of college football fans did. I asked myself, "Is Ohio State really the best team in the country?"

I startled myself with the conclusion I came to. Ohio State can't be the best team in the country.

It's not even the best team in its own conference.

When Michigan lured Jim Harbaugh home from the NFL, it was expected that, eventually, he'd help restore Michigan to its previous glory. Maybe he wouldn't win multiple national titles, but at the least he'd make the team a perennial contender in the Big Ten once again.

It just wasn't supposed to happen this quickly.

While Ohio State seems to be going through a post-national championship hangover -- a lot like what we saw from Florida State last year -- and Michigan State is just not the team we expected (the once dominant Michigan State defense has been incredibly mediocre so far this season), Michigan has begun to dominate its opponents, and has been the best team in the Big Ten.

The Wolverines may have a loss on their record, but that sole loss came against a Utah team that's currently undefeated, and beat Oregon by 42 points in Autzen Stadium earlier this season.

Michigan State could only beat that same Oregon squad by three points in East Lansing.

In Michigan's four wins, it's outscored its opponents 122-14, and it hasn't allowed a single point in over eight quarters. That's 30 straight possessions in which Michigan's opponent has failed to score a single point.

Compare that to Ohio State and Michigan State, the two Big Ten teams ranked ahead of the Wolverines in the polls, who found themselves in fourth quarter battles with Indiana and Purdue respectively.

According to the Sagarin Ratings, Michigan's strength of schedule to this point is ranked No. 31. Ohio State checks in at No. 74, while the Spartans pull up the rear at No. 83. So Michigan is playing a tougher schedule and blowing out its opponents in the process, while Ohio State and Michigan State are sleepwalking against easier opponents.

Advanced stats agree with Michigan being better than its Big Ten counterparts as well. Using F/+ from Football Outsiders, Michigan is the No. 7 team in the country. Ohio State is No. 13, while Michigan State is No. 19.

Now, none of this is to say that Michigan is a team without flaws. Its offense has been competent and nothing more. The passing game has been poor, having thrown more interceptions than touchdowns, and while the Wolverines are averaging over 200 yards per game rushing, they're doing so more with quantity than quality.

Where Michigan's true brilliance lies is on the defensive side of the ball.

We've already gone over the 30-possession shutout streak, but even against Utah this was an impressive unit. The Utah offense averaged only 4.8 yards per play against Michigan, but its averaged 5.8 yards per play in ever other game. On the season the Wolverines are allowing only 184 yards per game and 3.10 yards per play (2.6 ypp in its four wins). Both of those numbers rank second nationally, behind a Boston College team that's had the benefit of two FCS opponents this season.

If comparing the offensive and defensive units of the best teams in the Big Ten, there simply is no unit in the conference better than the Michigan defense.

This could all change quickly, mind you. I'm not here trying to tell you that Michigan is going to win the Big Ten, knocking off both Michigan State and Ohio State along the way (Michigan does host both teams in Ann Arbor this season).

As I've gone over, the Michigan defense may be dominant, but its entirely possible the Michigan offense will put it in one too many bad positions. Michigan's offense has turned the ball over nine times through five games, but the defense has bailed it out time after time, and forced seven turnovers itself to help balance the numbers. It's also entirely possible that Ohio State and Michigan State suddenly awaken from their daze (though I think Ohio State is far more likely to do that than Michigan State at this point), and begin to look like the teams we thought they would be all along.

But right now, Michigan is the best team in the Big Ten, and it really isn't all that close.

After watching both teams over the weekend, I won't be surprised if MSU loses this weekend. They just aren't firing on all cylinders. UM, on the other hand, is playing like Bo has risen from his grave.

Maybe all this Harbaugh hype is true (i.e.- his tears cure cancer but he never cries, etc).

MSU has 12 of its starting 22 injured or out. If UM had that many injuries and was winning ugly, all that would be reported is how good they COULD be if only harbaugh had healthy players...but since it's MSU it's just "excuse making" as well as definitive proof of the demise of the program.

They're 6-0 with 12 of their starters out at some point. Why isn't THAT the story? oh yeah... HARBAAAAAAAaUGH!!!!1!!!!11!!!!

Harbaugh has Michigan playing LIKE THEY SHOULD BE PLAYING because he's a good coach and the last two clowns were disasters. the cupboards weren't "bare". the program is top program and still pulled good recruits. He salted in a competent grad transfer QB, competent preparation, and has the D is playing out of their minds. 3 shut outs is a legit thing. I'd just not get too giddy considering the competition.

I don't think MSU is as bad as the "sky is falling" folks are claiming ...nor do I think UM is as good as those same folks are claiming.

MSU by 6....

^Eminem channeling how millions of UM fans looked at the end of the Big Game.

I was at a bar filled with UM fans, the Walmart kind. We left abruptly when I started singing the MSU fight song after the fumblerooski. Almost got my ass kicked by thirty people!

UMich Student Says Football Player Gave Her STD, In A Very Public Way

Image

The author reportedly printed 5,000 of the fliers and plastered them all around the giant Ann Arbor campus — and, of course, lots of photos of the handbills have made their way onto social media. In the notice, she accuses Peppers of infecting her with chlamydia for a second time, after he knew he had the STD. She also implies in the flier, which is addressed as a letter to Peppers, that he used excuses to persuade her to have unprotected sex.

She also angrily highlights the fact that the STD could have damaged her reproductive health, had it been untreated. She writes, "I cannot stomach to see your face again knowing you're infecting other young women unbeknownst to them, which as you may know, is a felony."

Peppers, for his part, is denying the rumors, calling them slander in a tweet. Today, he posted, "The slander is crazy. My word is all I have, I will continue to walk w. my chest and chin high. People love bringing someone down. #prayedup."

Would she have taken him back after the first time if he didn't have the status of a scholarship athlete?
