The short bus that carts the sovereign citizens movement has an empty seat this morning. The rocket surgeon Lavoy Finicum -grabber of public land and proponent of nonsensical interpretations of the US constitution- got smoked last night when he mistakenly believed that by leaving his snipers' nest for a meeting with like-minded seditionists he would be accorded kid-glove treatment.

Love this bit from a UK newspaper...

Speaking to The Oregonian on the eve of his death, LaVoy Finicum noted that law enforcement officials 'have become more hardened' as of late.
'They're doing all the things that show they want to take some kinetic action against us, and we're saying, "Why be so unfriendly?"' the militia spokesman told the paper.

Gee, maybe the fact that you and the team have gloated about chasing off the federal government from the Bundy ranch and having weapons pointed at every agent and law enforcement official in sight... do you think that things like that might be setting off legitimate authority?

While I agree that these guys got what's coming to them, it still doesn't address the root of the problem out there and the reason why these things are happening? That being that the federal government through "land management" fucking with citizens' livelihoods that they have been engaged in for generations.

I mean, is there a reason why the Federal government owns 85% of Nevada and shouldn't the revenue that land generates go to the (sovereign) state it's in instead of Washington?
Where the hell am I going? And what the hell am I doing in this handbasket?

Is the federal government getting rich / states going broke over revenues generated from federal lands? Could be the case, but I've not heard this argument before just now.

I'd need to know more about how people's livelihoods are being jacked over before signing up for this one. In the two "Bundy" related cases it seems that private citizens went onto public land and assumed rights that were not theirs, sort of like when I expanded my vegetable garden over the property line and into my neighbor's yard. My mistake was inadvertent, but the ranchers appear to have said "I want that" and marched onto property that they knew wasn't theirs.

Personally, I want a strong central government, albeit one that is judicious in it's use of power. States' rights proponents seem to me to be the sort of selfish pricks who are happy to watch your house burn or you to struggle with your packages because it's NOT THEIR PROBLEM. And I say "selfish" because while they may claim things like "I don't need the fire department so why should I pay?" and "that's your war, not mine" because such claims ignore that the blanket of relative peace and stability exists because the central government provides protections, soothes the pain of the poor and disaffected, etc. These guys want the benefits but are unwilling to pay for their spot in American society. Hey, I have an idea for the Bundy's and self-proclaimed sovereign types who feel that their natural rights are being trammeled: go somewhere where else where there are no laws and homestead.

I think, you're misreading my premise. Apparently, what's been happening is that the Federal government has been snapping up property and forcing people off their land by demanding inordinate payments to graze, restricting water right upstream, forcing ranchers to sell and the snapping up properties as people leave

I agree that there should be a strong central government, too. It should be strong in the state capital. State governments are more accountable to their citizenry than the Fed. Our current Congress' inability to do anything is a perfect example

Like I said, is there a good reason why the Federal government owns 85% of Nevada? And shouldn't the citizens of Nevada be responsible for the land that falls within their borders and not the caprice of some un-elected bureaucrat 2500 miles away in DC. While I don't agree with what these people did, is it not possible that they are just fed the fuck up?

D-Day, the land, at least the land Bundy claims as his, was never his or his ancestors nor did the Federal gov't "snap up" said property :
In 1848, as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the United States purchased from Mexico land that is now the southwestern region of the United States. Since then, the government has continuously owned land in what is now Nevada, including the Bunkerville Allotment.[3][4] The Nevada Territory, which was partitioned in 1861 from the Utah Territory, became a state in 1864. The original settlers in the 1840s and 1850s were Mormons from Utah and southern small-time farmers and ranchers from Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi. After the end of the American Civil War, much of the land was settled by rural farmers, squatters and small-time cattle ranchers from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Missouri and Kansas, escaping from the post-Civil War Reconstruction and the associated violence and displacement.[citation needed] Since 1934 federal rangelands in Nevada have been managed principally by either the Bureau of Land Management or its predecessor, the United States Grazing Service, or the United States Forest Service.

Many years ago, the people in that area were allowed to graze their animals for a fee; Bundy decided in 1993 that he no longer wished to pay the fee.
Under Bureau of Land Management permits first issued in 1954, Bundy grazed his cattle legally and paid his grazing fees on the Bunkerville Allotment until 1993. In that year, as a protest, Bundy did not pay to renew his permit, and it was canceled in 1994

This is simply a matter of him wanting for free what others pay for.
Though the agency made several attempts to have Bundy renew the permit, the rancher declared that he no longer recognized the BLM's authority to regulate his grazing and he asserted that he had "vested rights" to graze cattle on the land.[3] Federal courts have consistently ruled against Bundy, finding that he is a trespasser with no right to graze on federal land and authorizing the BLM to remove his cattle and levy damages for unauthorized use.[3][10]

Bundy has since accumulated more than $1 million of unpaid grazing fees and court-ordered fines.[11][12] The Portland Oregonian newspaper reported in May 2014 that the amount that Bundy owed stood in "stark contrast" to the situation in Oregon, where just 45 of the state's roughly 1,100 grazing permit holders collectively owed $18,759 in past-due payments to the BLM.[13] Excluding Bundy's unpaid fees, the total of all late grazing fees owed nationwide to the BLM was only $237,000, the newspaper said.[14]

And so, I'll take a tack that, I will believe nothing I read and half of what I see. Maybe I'm delving a little to much into this, and I will state again that I do not agree with these idiots taking over that Federal building. As I recall, the issue with the Bundys originally stemmed from the BLM declaring and piece of land a protected tortoise habitat and jacking up the grazing fees. But these people are idiots and that seems to be where the story is and where it's focused. As soon as they show up the story is moot, because they are judged to be idiots. But that's not the case. This case involves a different family, who HAVE COMPLIED with the Feds in every manner, don't support the "militia" idiots, and yet still reside as guests of the Federal gov't right due to a judge that said they're original sentences weren't strict enough. What's the answer, then, to question of why the Hammonds took a plea deal and went to prison. Were they poaching as the gov't alleges or did they inadvertently burn federal land as they allege? We'll never know, will we? I mean. it'd be nice if we had journalists interested in the facts of this case instead of slanting the story because the Keystone Kops showed up

http://www.dailywire.com/news/2303/here ... en-shapiro

So I'll ask again. Why does the Federal government own so much land out west and is it necessary that they do so? Why is this not the purview of the states on which the land resides. It seems that no one wants to talk about the real issue. That maybe these people's livelihoods are a daily trip to the Secretary of Stare dealing with the Feds and that they are fed the fuck up

Maybe it's just the eternal skeptic in me, but I just think here's more going on here than just the Bundys are idiots. which is the spin I see
Where the hell am I going? And what the hell am I doing in this handbasket?

The Fed doesn't just own land in the west, they own it in every state. The forests in Michigan are largely National Forests. It's to protect land so that every tree isn't cut down and every square inch of land isn't mined. It's similar to National Parks, National Monuments, etc.
Good Lord, if you put the Federally held land in Michigan into Snyder's hands, it would be owned by the Koch Brothers by now

re: people's livelihoods being put in jeopardy... dunno. I agree that it is challenging to disentangle the case of the father & son currently imprisoned from that of the occupiers. It would be useful to understand the degree to which federal land ownership is a legitimate hardship to the locals. My knee-jerk reaction is "screw the locals" and I say that on the basis of what I've seen and heard among people with property up north. Could be that it's more of an indictment of me because of the company that I keep, but I've heard many times of the bonanza that is nearby state or federal land, as in "hey, let's cut firewood from the unattended state forest" or "just dump all of the accumulated trash just off of the track through the federal land." If the feds were grabbing land today and pushing off established businesses. farms then I might feel differently, but I'm thinking that father & son as well as the Bundy's were the one's trespassing upon land that has belonged to the feds since forever. Not trying to be a dick, D-day, but I'd like to know more before I budge on my stubbornness.

So let's take the Snyder out this discussion. He has has own difficulties right now unrelated to this that he has to account for. I mean why not include Granholm, Engler, Blanchard. Milliken, Romney, Swainson, Williams et al as to ownership of what ever land in Michigan is federally owned (and, yes, I am well aware the a LOT of the northern Lower Peninsula and most of the UP falls under this category)

This explanation does nothing to explain that maybe these people out west are simply fed the fuck up with dealing with the Fed? And where are the journalists, trying to find out the facts as they are supposed to do, bringing these facts to light?

They're absent....

And hence there's really no way figure this shit out as we all know the court system favors those with the most money....and who has more money and influence than the Fed?

People whose way of life is dependent on the largese of the federal government complaining that the terms aren't favorable enough. I'm having flashbacks to May 2014...

higgs1634 wrote:There can be a legitimate discussion about why the US owns 80% of Nevada, but the fact of the matter is the feds own all that land because they got it in the first place through a treaty with Mexico. Then they set about removing the Shoshone and Paiute indians and eventually carved three states out of it. The feds still own it because they never sold it off. contrary to cliven's claims, Nevada never had any sovereignty over the lands. And again, a huge bit of irony here is that Cliven's appeals to justice and ancestral claims seem to omit the Shoshone and Paiute that were removed from the land where Bundy wants to graze his cows for free. Unless I missed the part about how he'd rather pay the indians than the feds...but somehow I think his opinion is the injun is better off on the reservation.

Chuck is also skeptical about news coverage of the Oregon standoff.
Three important videos about the #oregonstandoff

These are very important to watch. This is a guy who was at the traffic stop up in Oregon. (Via Raw Story)

The reason why I am posting these, is because there are some people out there, who are reporting bad information on the internet about this event. This should set the record straight.
