Gary Kubiak, who led the Houston Texans to back-to-back AFC South division titles and the franchise’s only two playoff victories but stumbled to 11 straight losses and a 2-11 record this year, was fired on Friday.

The decision was announced by owner Bob McNair hours after the team’s 27-20 loss at Jacksonville – a final straw in a season that started with Super Bowl aspirations but has resulted in the worst record in the NFL.

Thursday night’s defeat gave the Texans their longest losing streak in the franchise’s 12-year history and matched the longest in Houston’s pro football history, tying the Oilers (1972, 1994) for that dubious distinction.

Kinda glad that the Texans fell apart this year. They were looking pretty strong the last few seasons and I don't want them to reach the Super Bowl before the Lions.

Mike Shanahan might get the gate this afternoon, according to some outlets.

One of those outlets is Jay Glazer, so consider that.

Mack Brown reportedly is stepping down/being pushed out at Texas. Texas is denying it, which means Mack Brown is toast.

Got a two-fer today.

First up...

Weatherman Chuck Gaidica stepping down to become Novi pastor

Novi pastor, huh? Wonder where he's going to get his drink on out there.

But then there's this...
George Jackson resigns from DEGC

By Amy Haimerl

George Jackson has resigned from the Detroit Economic Growth Corp.

He will remain with the economic development group as the president and CEO until March 31, when he will leave to form his own consulting firm.

"George Jackson is an exceptional leader, and we will miss him tremendously at DEGC," said Rod Gillum, chairman of the board of the DECG, in a release. "With Jackson at the helm, DEGC has had a remarkable track record of success — even through incredibly challenging times. I have no doubt he will continue his success, and the city of Detroit will see the benefits of that as well."

Jackson has served as president and CEO of DEGC since February 2002. Prior to his appointment, he worked for 27 years at DTE Energy, rising to the position of director of customer marketing.

Jackson has worked in the field of economic development since 1984, and has played an influential role in the city of Detroit, Southeastern Michigan and state of Michigan economic development programs, initiatives and organizations. He has also served as an adviser to corporate, political, government, community, civic and educational executives and leaders on economic development issues.

Crain's Detroit Business will update this story throughout the day.

Well that's not good.

The Detroit Pistons announced they have fired coach Maurice Cheeks just 50 games into his tenure.

The news was delivered to Cheeks this morning.

“Our record does not reflect our talent and we simply need a change,” Pistons owner Tom Gores said in a released statement today. “We have not made the kind of progress that we should have over the first half of the season. This is a young team and we knew there would be growing pains, but we can be patient only as long as there is progress. The responsibility does not fall squarely on any one individual, but right now this change is a necessary step toward turning this thing around. I still have a lot of hope for this season and I expect our players to step up. I respect and appreciate Maurice Cheeks and thank him for his efforts; we just require a different approach.”

Some people call him Maurice.
I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was. Now, what I'm with isn't 'it,' and what's 'it' seems weird and scary.

Vince Goodwill at the News is reporting Joe Dumars will resign at or before the end of the season.

It's been 10 years since they won the title ... seems like a lot longer than that.

Yeah, it does feel pretty long. I'd still consider him our Jerry West. 29 years with an organization is a rare thing and there are celebrated champions out there still trying to win a title as an executive (Bird, Phil Jackson) so he's proven his ability to build a championship team. Time to move on though. Even Jerry West left the Lakers.

Looking back, seems like the biggest fuck up of the coaching carousel was Davidson ordering Dumars to fire Larry Brown for being a drama queen. The franchise started coasting and hasn't stopped to this day.

I wonder if Dumars will end up in Cleveland. Makes sense to me.

He'll end up somewhere. He's still a young man and could work with the right owner.
The beginning of the end, I think, was when Davidson died. His widow didn't allow him to deal while she negotiated the sale of the team and, once Gores took over, the team was stuck in neutral.
To be sure, the Iverson-Billups trade was a disaster and they could've moved Hamilton and Prince sooner for some kind of value.

Brown, IIRC, had myriad health problems toward the end of his time in Detroit (the catheter bag under his sweatpants was hard to miss during practices) and I think Brown wanted out as much as the Pistons were tired of him. Davidson did order Dumars to can Carlisle because he was an asshole who treated little people in the organization like shit.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about his health issues, he had a tough stretch there for a bit. He was a drama queen too though. All that speculation about him going to Cleveland while the Pistons were trying to 2-peat ruffled the old man's feathers good from what I remember.

That Carlisle firing was when I turned around on Drew Sharp. He wrote a column predicting it that I blew off at the time. I think he was the first one talking about it. That was a hell of a scoop.

If the AP's sources are correct, Dumars will remain with the organization in an advisory role. I found that kind of odd.

Not sure if he and his wife still have high school-age kids or not.

That's what I was thinking. Or maybe he just doesn't want go into the GM merry-go-round and is personally comfortable here.

Yeah, not the outcome I was expecting but glad they are giving him as many options as possible.

Ron Gardenhire got the axe today. I had no idea they'd won just one playoff series in his tenure.
