I've been a UFO fan since forever, especially the Schenker years, so I have all the albums, but it's neat to hear them live or done in sessions.

Schenker rules. Too bad he's nuttier than a shithouse squirrel.

This looks right up Yamars alley. A little Sabbath, some Dead, a bit mariachi band, a little surf rock and some Funkadelic

They're a lot of fun live. They're on the same label as Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and Charles Bradley.
My hand to God, she's gonna be at Carnegie Hall. But you - I'll let you have her now at the old price, OK? Which is, which is anything you wanna give me. Anything at all.

Bob Dylan recently received an honor and he made a speech. I liked this part...

Critics say I mangle my melodies, render my songs unrecognizable. Oh, really? Let me tell you something. I was at a boxing match a few years ago seeing Floyd Mayweather fight a Puerto Rican guy. And the Puerto Rican national anthem, somebody sang it and it was beautiful. It was heartfelt and it was moving. After that it was time for our national anthem. And a very popular soul-‐singing sister was chosen to sing. She sang every note -‐-‐ that exists, and some that don't exist. Talk about mangling a melody. You take a one-‐syllable word and make it last for 15 minutes? She was doing vocal gymnastics like she was a trapeze act. But to me it was not funny.

Where were the critics? Mangling lyrics? Mangling a melody? Mangling a treasured song? No, I get the blame. But I don't really think I do that. I just think critics say I do.

Who is he talking about? Jennifer Hudson? Any one of the school of Mariah Carey style yodelers? I really hate that shit. My father always enjoyed watching the Boston Pops on the 4th of July. I went to the nursing home and watched it with him. We both agreed that it was fucking awful. Not only was Jennifer Hudson awful, but she sang original songs and they were all awful too. Thanks for ruining my last holiday with my dad, Jennifer.

XM is greatest development of the past twenty years. I love playing the daily music lottery and hearing for the first time all sorts of awesome tunes. Awesome = catchy, complex, pleasing, or all three.

Today I heard Donovan (mellow yellow) perform Riki Tiki Tavi. Can't figure out how to grab the url from YouTube on this mobile so you'll have to find it yourself. Anyway, this will be my favorite song for the next few days or even weeks.

I had a listen to that on Spotify. It's pretty good, from 1970. It is in the Essential Donovan collection, so I suppose one that is one that is listed among his best.

More of a reggae flavor than most of his stuff, I think.

Glad you like it, but my experience with it was a week or so of great discoveries, followed by the same tripe as regular radio...playing the same 10 songs ad nauseum.

I agree with this, although I would say the number in the pot is a bit higher than ten. I am hearing the same songs across multiple stations, sometimes at or very near the same time. Are they telling me that Faction, Deep Tracks, and Willie's Roadhouse listeners all have the same playlist ? I notice that the songs in heavy rotation across several channels change every few weeks. Elder son put forth the idea that their licensing scheme is somehow driving it, that is they license a certain bucket of music for a block of time and run it for a period and across a planned spectrum of channels that the think will make it seem much fresher and random. Riki Tiki Tavi will be airing on Coffee House, 60s on 6, and Deep Vinyl for 4 weeks and then it is returned to obscurity, never to be heard from again. But don't worry, Electric Banana has a month long run coming up this summer.

I hadn't thought of the licensing angle. Could be that there's something to that; have to think more about that.

Among other things I look to be surprised & delighted by radio. With this conversation in mind I dotted over to FM on the ride down this morning and heard a snippet of Tom Petty's "Refuge" and then on WCSX it was Eric Clapton's "Cocaine." They're not bad songs, but they've been in steady rotation for at least 35 years. On XM Quiet Riot played (Slade's) "Mental Health" but then there was a tune by Cactus that I'd not heard anywhere. So, advantage XM.

Hadn't thought of the licensing angle, either. Makes sense. But the other thing that turned me off of XM was that when I let it lapse, their marketing people were calling me constantly , offering me all kinds of deals to re-up. I got so tired of it I finally threatened them with physical violence if they didn't stop calling. Then the mailings started....

I "found" this local band at Ferndale Bluesfest. They're fantastic. This live recording's audio quality is just ok but there are some studio songs on their web site.
