After a point, though, I say fuck you to the shit-slingers who would pile on another because of what they read. Reading a manifesto doesn't have to mean that one takes it as a guidebook for life. General or even esoteric interest, you know.

Books that I intend to read one day for the sake of my education:

Protocols of the Elders of Zion
Turner Diaries
Mein Kampf (only have made it about half-way through, twice)
Koran

I think you are missing Mr. Stickman's implied allegiance to Rand in his word balloon in the first panel.

Have you no critical reading skills? Clearly he adores her. Which makes him have terrible taste.

His lack of attention to detail may explain his affinity for heavy metal, too.

I finished reading "Dune" for the first time today. Most of you know I'm a pretty big fucking nerd, so this is late coming in my circle. But wow, amazing, I can't imagine how somebody could come up with such a unique story. I am curious if I should read any of the sequels, or appreciate it for the standalone novel it once was... So if any of you philistines can point me in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated.

I say don't bother. I've read Dune a few times, but have never been able to make it through any of the so-called sequels.

Thanks, Beav. I had a feeling. Anyway, I have a lot of others things I know I need to read before taking the chance on it.

I don't think I ever finished it. I attempted to many years ago, but probably required massive amounts of "spice" to get through it. Not like snorting worm shit is the way to go, but...

Reading my first Hitchens book, Good is Not Great, and really enjoying it. He is ascerbic - but not an asshole - which can be a difficult line to toe. Much more pleasant and amusing than some of the more militant athiests.

Started reading Stephen King's "Under The Dome" a month or so ago because I wanted to watch the television program (I like to read the book before the visual media). Nearly 700 pages into the 1,000+ and it's been, like most of his books to me, very entertaining. Say what you will about King, and it will probably be true, but I like him and that's all that matters to me. With this book, he has taken time to develop a lot of characters in depth and tell several intertwined stories in one huge story and he has really pulled it off up to this point. Obviously I don't know if he will wrap it up in a satisfactory manner, but it has been my experience after reading 30+ books by him that he will. I think the only King book that I didn't really care for was "Cell".

Also, was the previous post the last one by Ya Mar? Search and Rescue?

I've been watching the show, (no spoilers) and I usually don't follow a TV series these days, but I figured it's only 13 episodes so no big deal, right? Whatever happens will happen by the end of the summer, and I won't have to suffer any more of this terrible acting. Then a week or so ago I hear the show has been picked up for a second season. Now it's a struggle to make the effort to record and watch it, just don't think I have two seasons in me.

BTW there are two actresses from Detroit 1-8-7 in it.

I've seen all the episodes save for last night's. I like the show but it is absolutely nothing like the book. Whole plots and story lines are completely different and/or non-existent.

I have read a bunch of King, and like you, I find the need to justify that, since everybody is always at the ready to shit on it. It can be fun, and if it entertains you, that's all that matters. I'm right with you there. This show reminds me a lot of the "The Stand" miniseries, and I was willing to give it that kind of attention, because I enjoyed The Stand, book and miniseries. But two seasons? I dunno. Do you really have that in you, with this cast? The guy who plays Big Jim has literally one facial expression. You are imagining it in your head even now and knowing I'm right.

Fuck, I'm not just seeing it in my head now. I was only a hundred or so pages into the book when I watched the first episode so I picture him every time I'm reading a part of the book that mentions him. I don't mind it so much though because he's in Breaking Bad and that show kicks fucking ass. I think can hold on for two seasons but then again I watch Hardcore Pawn so I can put up with some pretty shitty television.

I've never seen "The Stand" and I think that's because I've never read it. That and "Under The Dome" are his two of his longest novels. I'll have to put that one my list to read and I may even have it on my bookcase. On a related note, I enjoyed the novel "Bag Of Bones" and likewise the four or six hour mini-series was enjoyable as well. I believe it's on Netflix.

Roq, if you haven't read "The Stand" please do so immediately. I like some of Stephen King's stuff. Thing is, he admits his stuff won't ever be considered great. I believe he once said his books were the food equivalent to a Big Mac. Sometimes, you read for a diversion. His books do that very well.

I don't know if it's an age thing, but for years now, 99% of what I read is non-fiction. However, I have read the Janet Evanovich series. Again, entertaining and not a bit thought-provoking.

I bought the first three books in the series for my wife one year for christmas. I think she read through the series in a few months and now patiently waits for new installments. There is some funny stuff in her books.

I think there are almost 20 books now. My sister is addicted to her stories.

She has started a new series based on on of the characters from the "One for the Money" series. Wife is addicted to those too. Actually, she reads anything by Evanovich she can get her hands on.
Just another run of the mill suburban white devil, with an "Assault" weapon. Molon Labe.
