Say what you will about King, and it will probably be true, but I like him and that's all that matters to me. With this book, he has taken time to develop a lot of characters in depth and tell several intertwined stories in one huge story and he has really pulled it off up to this point. Obviously I don't know if he will wrap it up in a satisfactory manner, but it has been my experience after reading 30+ books by him that he will. I think the only King book that I didn't really care for was "Cell".

I've been watching the show, (no spoilers) and I usually don't follow a TV series these days, but I figured it's only 13 episodes so no big deal, right? Whatever happens will happen by the end of the summer, and I won't have to suffer any more of this terrible acting. Then a week or so ago I hear the show has been picked up for a second season. Now it's a struggle to make the effort to record and watch it, just don't think I have two seasons in me.

BTW there are two actresses from Detroit 1-8-7 in it.

I've seen all the episodes save for last night's. I like the show but it is absolutely nothing like the book. Whole plots and story lines are completely different and/or non-existent.

I have read a bunch of King, and like you, I find the need to justify that, since everybody is always at the ready to shit on it. It can be fun, and if it entertains you, that's all that matters. I'm right with you there. This show reminds me a lot of the "The Stand" miniseries, and I was willing to give it that kind of attention, because I enjoyed The Stand, book and miniseries. But two seasons? I dunno. Do you really have that in you, with this cast? The guy who plays Big Jim has literally one facial expression. You are imagining it in your head even now and knowing I'm right.

Fuck, I'm not just seeing it in my head now. I was only a hundred or so pages into the book when I watched the first episode so I picture him every time I'm reading a part of the book that mentions him. I don't mind it so much though because he's in Breaking Bad and that show kicks fucking ass. I think can hold on for two seasons but then again I watch Hardcore Pawn so I can put up with some pretty shitty television.

I've never seen "The Stand" and I think that's because I've never read it. That and "Under The Dome" are his two of his longest novels. I'll have to put that one my list to read and I may even have it on my bookcase. On a related note, I enjoyed the novel "Bag Of Bones" and likewise the four or six hour mini-series was enjoyable as well. I believe it's on Netflix.

Roq, if you haven't read "The Stand" please do so immediately. I like some of Stephen King's stuff. Thing is, he admits his stuff won't ever be considered great. I believe he once said his books were the food equivalent to a Big Mac. Sometimes, you read for a diversion. His books do that very well.

Checked the bookcase downstairs and I do indeed have a complete and unabridged hardcover edition of "The Stand". I guess I'll have to read that one next as I only have 85 pages or so left on "Under The Dome".

Not a huge King fan; I see nothing wrong with his books, I've just never gotten into them. BUT, the one exception is his short story "Apt Pupil". Read that one.

Re: the "nothing wrong with them" pov... The story arcs and protagonists are interchangeable. If that's ok then ok, but in my case I reached a point where he couldn't disguise the fact the magic was just the same, tired, recycled sugar-water so I quit. I was coming to the same conclusion about Joseph Waumbaugh's police fiction until he rolled out The Secrets of Harry Bright. Wow, what a shift in course.

I thought we had a Mitch Albom Time thread but can't find it. Anyway, at work the other night I saw an Albom book on the desk. I asked "who's reading this crap?" and someone else said "I dunno" and gave it a quick thumb through. First off, it's small, about half the size of a regular novel. And it's thin, but what really struck me was the print size. It's like a font you'd use for a kid's book, The Little Engine That Could or whatever, or for old people with vision so far gone that there's no correcting it with glasses. I'd be surprised if it would take an hour to read it from cover to cover. This guy is no writer, unless you consider tweets to be great literature. Cross to Crap Journalists and Mind Food For Proles.

"The Stand" is my favorite Steven King novel. I have the complete and uncut version. Read the ten pound book twice. What a hell of a read. Brotha is interested in reading "It". I told him it's the scariest Steven King book he's ever wrote... in my opinion. He has my book. Can't wait for him to read it and share his thoughts.

Under The Dome was a good book but I think he kinda phoned in the ending. I've read about 50 pages of The Stand but haven't picked it up since I got Grand Theft Auto V for my PS3 two months ago.

It's a killer of life/gym/yardwork/books, etc. but I love it. I'm about to finish the main storyline and then I'll start with the online part of the game, which is a whole new aspect of it.

Andrew Sullivan has issued a mea culpa for his cheerleading for the Iraq war. I'm especially interested to see what he has to say about his bullshits posts from back then conflating opposition to war with being part of a pro-terrorist "fifth column."

Reading Gulp! It's fun. I hate her cliffhanger transitions from one chapter to the next, though.

I've read a lot of her columns in some magazine or another; she's pretty entertaining. I'll have to pick up the book.

Brotha got me "The Complete Illustrated Encyclopedia of Royal Britain" by Charles Phillips for Christmas. It doesn't go as far back as my other book "British Kings and Queens" by Mike Ashley; however, Phillips goes more into the personal details and traits of the Kings and Queens than Ashley does. Phillips also includes the various castles that Kings and Queens grew up in and personal favorite retreats of said monarchy. As a person who has never been to England, it's a treat.

Have you read Antonia Fraser's "Kings and Queens Of England" or her "Six Wives of King Henry the Eighth"? Those are two of my favorite references for the British monarchy. I just got done watching the first two seasons of Monarchy with David Starkey. I took me up through Cromwell and then I realized Netflix didn't have season three. It's a good thing I know how it ends.
