I hear ya, Doc, and my goddam Facebook page requires an occasional cleansing, because some of my various acquaintances are more religious than are others, and they clearly feel the need to blare out their convictions with the wild, pealing ferocity of Maynard Ferguson abusing a trumpet.

But, next to the Very Religious, ya wanna know who's responsible for the next-heaviest amount of Facebook litter?
The Atheists.

Speaking as a guy who is neither religious nor atheistic (you'll just have to take my word for it,) I've observed that, generally speaking, the atheists are just as guilty (maybe more guilty) of over-sharing their point-of-view as are the religious, and not only are they just as nauseatingly loud about their feelings, they compound the offensive smuggery; where the religious imply that the non-religious are wrong, the atheists add "stupid."

I mean, what the fuck? Is it possible to be a "practicing atheist?" Isn't that sorta self-contradictory?
Now Doc, don't take this personally, especially since you didn't actually declare yourself to be an atheist, but Hey, you atheists out there? Fuck you guys, too. I'd like for you motherfuckers to shut the fuck up just as badly as I wish the same of the religious.
I don't give a flying fuck what any of you think, believe, or feel. There's a whole pile of cosmological shit that interests me, it even fascinates me, and a huge part of its charm is that I Do Not Know. I don't want to know, goddamit, it's the mystery that makes it fascinating, and all of the loudmouths who seem to be accessing some kind of weird gratification from advertising their religion, lack thereof, or general refusal to consider anything that cannot be explained are making way too much fuckin' noise.
I'm trying to contemplate the inherently divine nature of my own little corner of the Great Nothingness, and every time I lift my furrowed, world-weary brow, one of you engoddened or godless motherfuckers is runnin' yer goddam yaps.

Really? What legislation are the athiests trying to ram down your throat based on fairy tales? I appreciate you trying to be fair, but there's no comparison. What horseshit are the athiests trying to force schools to teach your kids? What signs are the athiests marching around with to proclaim that you or your friends are hated by a higher power? Which athiest presidential candidates are invoking the name of god in order to convince you they are morally superior to their rivals? I'm not an atheist, but they aren't the ones who have pushed me from tolerance to going on the offensive against people who are blatantly attacking science and the rights of others.

Doc, every point you made was excellent and true. I think we are similarly irritated, but by different things and from different angles.

You are raising the socio-political aspects, and your point is irrefutable. Only one camp is advancing its troops on the other, and given their strength in number, it seems that the current anti-bullying consciousness would apply thereto, but noooo.

Me, I'm more pursuing my usual vendetta against little day-to-day things that frost my ass, and one of those things is the trumpeting from both sides, a din which noises up my Facebook page. A solution would be to drop, or edit, my "subscriptions" to certain folks, but since doing so would partially silence my very own brother, two good friends, and a number of others to whom I would prefer to remain open, I have little recourse and must go on brushing one banner or link out of my line of sight just in time for another to pop up, like a goddam hydra, and rear its regenerative head.

That, and the fact that I really do find the condescending attitude of so many atheists to be intolerable. I don't mind being scolded for being wrong, or tsk-tsk'ed for being an unrepentant, hedonistic, sensualist blackguard whose moral codes probably identify him as a true sociopath. Really, I don't.
It's the "obviously, your brain is moldy polenta" attitude, of some atheists toward various types of believers, that causes my bony little mitts to ball up into a fist. There is a flawed presumption inside of that condescension, and it's the presumption that irritates me.
If anyone really wants to know what I mean by that, I will explain, but that's a whole 'nother post.
Besides-- getting back to my original theme-- who really should be giving a damn about what anyone else, certainly including me, believes?

If your last sentence was how everybody acted, I wouldn't have been led to the rant of my original post. Unfortunately, it's not. There are people who would prefer we slip back into the dark ages, burn our science books, and go to a museum in Kentucky where cavemen are shown riding dinosaurs with saddles. And they are fighting for their way, forcing people to fight back. I'd rather deal with a condescending attitude than someone who is trying to legislate their beliefs on the rest of us. Like Rick Santorum saying he doesn't believe in the separation of church and state. One is annoying, the other is downright scary. (and yet you know THEY'D be the first to cry and scream about "sharia law")
