Not only is that damn funny, but it has probably spawned an outraged anti-blasphemy thread over on DY.

I was on the road early this morning but coincidentally drove right past that fucker when the flames were shooting high into the air. That was some scene.

Fire crews shut down Michigan Avenue in Corktown after 10:30 p.m. Monday when a fire broke out on the second floor of PJ's Lager House at 1254 Michigan Avenue.
Detroit Fire Battalion Cheif 1 John Slavik said crews contained the fire to a single unit on the southeast side of the second floor. He said the smoke damage only appeared to affect the upstairs of the building.
No injuries were reported; however Slavik said three cats that were pulled from the smokey unit by firefighters and given CPR using a special resuscitation device designed for animals but died.
EMS workers attempted to revive the blanket-wrapped cats in rain-slicked Michigan Avenue for several minutes before a man and woman, she visibly distraught, cradled the animals away.
Slavik said he didn't know for sure if any of the tenants were in the unit when the fire began and hadn't identified a cause as of about 11:15 p.m.
"We just smelled smoke and someone yelled everyone has to get out," said 33-year-old Nick Leu who came out to to the bar Monday to watch live music by Curtin, Zombie Jesus and the Chocolate Sunshine Band and Jeffrey Jablonsky. "The fire department came right away."
He estimated as many as 30 were inside the downstairs bar when the evacuation occurred. Many stood outside waiting to find out if they would be allowed to reenter.
Fire crews remained on scene and a portion of Michigan Avenue in front of the bar closed as of about 11:30 p.m.
PJ's Lager House opened in Detroit's Corktown Neighborhood in 1914, originally as a bakery and restaurant and later as a speakeasy during the Prohibition Era.

Special cat resuscitation device? Good to know DFD is looking out for the city's hipster kitties.

And there's this:
Two of our favorite Corktown neighbors' lives have been turned upside down due to a fire that struck this Monday night.
The fire spread quickly and though firefighters did all that they could, Brandon and Tati have lost almost everything. Brandon was overcome by smoke as he tried to save their three beloved cats from the fast-moving fire. EMS workers tried to revive the cats for several minutes but were unsuccessful.
We are accepting any donations to help our friends get back on their feet and into a new home.

I'm not saying anything about anything but it didn't look like they were living at the Waldorf.

We're moving to all cat-sized rescue equipment during bankruptcy. It's cheaper.
Overall, the contract seems to have been written by amateurs.

On my way back from Meijer this morning I saw this. I could feel the heat from 3-4 blocks away.

That church burned up good.

Former Detroit church catches fire Saturday morning
Former church building now vacant

A more accurate headline would have read "Former church building now a shell". The picture shows it fully involved.

It's the one on Woodward just above Crosswinds that's made of black stonework, across from the red stone Presbyterian seminary and the Vietnam vet place. Another architecturally significant structure which will be bulldozed.

edit: Sorry, didn't look at Andy's pictures above. They show it even more involved than the shot that accompanied the story.

Holy Christ on a crutch, those idiots at the adult table are acting like someone torched the National Cathedral while it was full of worshippers. It's a dilapidated church that hasn't been used in ages. An abandoned, dilapidated church burned down; let's blame the suburbs and Ilitch!!

The Historic Unitarian Church ON FIRE!

A nice idea but you can't have the 2016-17 Red Wings fans suffering from burning, bloody, fiery eyes at the sight of such an eyesore (as they'll bemoan).

ok, so put a sign out front that says it is the ruins of the historic old Olympia Stadium that was bombed by the Nazis in WWII. 60% of them would never know the difference, and will be taking selfies in front of it in no time.

What's wrong with suburban Red Wings fans! They don't want to be in a shelled out, burnt down, tagged up neighborhood?

If someone wants to de-blight a Detroit neighborhood they must be an elitist exo-burbanite!

Guess they need more parking for that fancy new arena they're getting such a sweetheart deal on. What a shame!

There was no graffiti on that church and it seemed to be structurally sound. I wonder who would profit from such a heinous act? Hmmm....

The historic church is long gone. Let the demolition begin.

While harboring no delusions that the cremains of the church will be preserved, I thought it was a cool building. One article said that it was "reported" to have been empty for at least ten years. No, I was invited inside by a group that was worshiping in there and it wasn't ten year ago. It looked to be in pretty good shape inside at the time, but pictures posted more recently by an adult show holes in the roof.

If it wasn't on Woodward it would be like, oh well, another church burned up, but this is going to leave a hole.

My ire isn't so much that someone is mourning the loss of a church but that they are blaming it on suburbanites and the building of the new arena. I wouldn't be at all surprised that it's arson, but I really don't think the Ilitch's would pay someone to burn it down for insurance money considering they don't even own it.
