HFD Political Dork Superthread

Postby Woodwards Friend » Fri Jan 30, 2009 2:07 pm

A garbage dump thread of the three or four of us who obsess about political process news and what not. Has Iowa set a date for the 2012 caucus yet?

The 200 or so people left in the Republican Party are meeting in Washington to annoint a leader of this Chamberlinite mob of Jesus-freaks. Michigan's own Saul Anuzis is (sort of) in the hunt.

First ballot: Duncan, 52 ; Steele, 46 ; Dawson, 28 ; Anuzis, 22; Blackwell, 20. 85 are needed to win.

Second ballot: Duncan, 48; Steele, 48; Dawson, 29; Anuzis, 24; Blackwell, 19. 168 votes needed to win.

It takes 85 votes to win so this could take a while, like the 1924 Democratic convention. It will be interesting to see if the Duncan bloc will hold out as long as the McAdoo faction in '24.

Duncan has withdrawn.

Looks like it will be Mike Steele.

The repubs would be wise to put a black man in their leadership.

But can they afford to lose Idaho?

I should add that one shouldn't count Dawson out just yet, especially if Blackwell's remaining support swings his way.

Can't believe that Art Blackwell has made it onto the fourth ballot. Highland Park rises!

Interestly enough, Art's strip club loving father Bob Blackwell (who recently died of a busted belly) was the first black Republican mayor in US history or something when he was mayor of Highland Park. He later switched parties.

This Blackwell dropped out and endorsed the other black. That's going to anger up the old guard and probably boost Dawson's total on the fifth ballot.

I thought itis was kind of sad that the RNC members ignored the rousing endorsement speeches from Governor DeVos and Senator Hoogendyk.

What's the word on the new guy? The one report I've seen so far says he's more moderate than some of the other options.

He compared stem cell researchers to the Nazis who experimented on Jews during World War II...

No. If I wanted to call him black, I would have wondered if the Republicans wanted to improve their chances in urban areas, or they wanted a fresh new face, or God forbid I just call him black.

I'm just curious about the direction the republicans are going to take in the next few years. Are they going to continue to be the "tails" to the democrat "head" side of the same coin or are they going to put together a real alternative for us.

And, no, that is not code for the gayness of either party.
