Which is better: UM or MSU?

Postby Catfish Jim » Sun Jan 17, 2010 6:54 pm

First of all I need to make some statements. I am not an educated man. I make my living using my hands so therefore I have little use for people who are educated and act like they know it all because they dont. But someday my offspring will go to college, that I know. In this world men like me are becoming a dying breed and I want the fruits of my loins to have an easier life. I'm sure you all agree there is nothing wrong with that.

So here's my question: assuming the grades are there and tuition will be covered by grants or loans, which school should I put on the pedestal as a the ultimate goal? I like Michigan with their storied football legacy and "Harvard of the West" standing among colleges but let me tell you, once you get away from the city no one likes Michigan at all. In fact they love MSU. Maybe its because every farming town has a MSU extension office with nice people who aren't all uppity about where they went to school or act like their poop dont smell.

So I'm torn about the whole gol darn issue. Any feedback on why one school is better than the other would be much obliged.

U-M is better because they say so. Confidence goes a long way in this world, and U-Mers have more of it than anybody on earth. Plus, plenty of trust-fund kids from Southern California to borrow from or rob should you find yourself short of cash. Then again, that's just my fourth-tier opinion, so maybe you should ask someone a little more qualified than me.

MSU is better because you won't remember a damn thing except all the nights you spent in the drunk tank. They've also discovered the highest and best use for a can of Busch--throwing it at the police. U-Mers always try to drink the stuff, which is something most of us only had to try once. Not many trust-fund kids, but plenty of rednecks from places like Coldwater who will offer you their last plug of Red Man when you're just drunk enough to accept it (which is something most of us didn't have to try at all).

What's always amazed me is the lopsided ratio of Michigan grads vs MSU grads who permanently reside in the state of Michigan. I know probably fifty State grads and maybe five U-M grads. Maybe its just the circle I run in, but I suspect many U-M grads scoot off to Long Island or Chicago as soon as they get their degree.

We're talking grads, not fans. Most U-M fans I know couldn't get into barber college, much less U-M. However when you see someone wearing State clothing, odds are they actually went there.

For academics and reputation UofM is the better of the two. As offered above, go there and jr. will get a national network of achievers. State will work, too, but the cachet isn't as hot. Question is, though how "hot" is enough. I interviewed for a gig in Escanaba during my first career, and there I realized that CMU was the paper that made one King Shit. Here, if you want to work in law or pharmacy or public administration you'll find WSU is the way to go.

It's kind of presumptuous to plot your children's future by picking the school. Not picking on you, Catfish, because I have the same concerns about what and where is best for my kids.

Smart and hard-working kids will achieve, no matter where they land. Thus sayeth Frank, proud grad of HFCC and a couple of other "aw shit" schools.

Comparing the two is apples and oranges in my opinion, but there are some variables worth consideration. CUTIES: MSU, without question. The place is overrun with them. AA on the other hand is a mecca for unpleasant-looking women with angry hornet dispositions. SPORTS: MSU, also without question. BBall program is among best in country and football program is on the road to respectability where UoM has a long way to go in both programs. ACADEMICS: UoM seems to win this category by default, but really, what good is a degree in 14th century Japanese literature? MSU on the other hand has more programs geared towards problem solving and real world applications. CAMPUS and FACILITIES: MSU, again. The UoM campus is all messed up with buildings scattered all over AA. OVERALL: Gotta go with MSU. Who wants to go to college with bummer people?

1) Catfish Jim is an unabashed cockpuncher. I see through you, you silly fuck.

2) There is no comparison between the two once one steps beyond the borders of the Water Wonderland. If you do not know which one matters beyond the borders then you need to do some research.

3) Long Island sucks. Chicago annoys the shit out of me lately as well.

I thought we were all cockpunchers here. I guess we need to standardize the definition. I always thought of it as a compliment, like when someone on DY is acting stupid we administer a verbal cockpunch to bring them to their senses.

As for Jim, I'd say he's just another character with a shtick, like Pa or Dead Ed. You people are getting too goddamn serious.

MSU had more "talent." Women there seemed a hell of a lot better looking. U-M had a lock on more dumb ass liberal causes, and therefore hippie chicks. (What was a shanty doing in the Diag for two years again?) It also appeared that U-M had a majority of the annoying Long Island/east coast gated community kids. (Why did some of these folks think that having to show a pass to get home every night was cool?)

It didn't matter either way to me because in college I couldn't have gotten laid had I been going to school in a women's prison and had a stack of pardons.

Overall, I think I lucked out going to U-M. I'm pretty sure that had I gone to MSU I would have started using more recreational drugs. Kids at MSU made it look fun. The ones who used coke and LSD at U-M were really fucking annoying, so I avoided them altogether.

Here's two definitions for cockpunch. No defs for cockpuncher.
1)Cockpunch

Definition: A punch to someones groin area

Usage: Bill drank Tom's last beer, so Tom gave him a cockpunch

2)Cockpunch

Definition: Not just a word, but a way of life.

Usage: Dude I'm totally going to cockpunch that guido in the Ed Hardy ensemble.

First of all, the whole point of picking a college is to find one as far away as possible and neither of those fit the bill, but when somebody tells me he went to State, well, it's hard to take them seriously after that.

My kids picked colleges just far enough away so that we didn't want to drive there all the time, but close enough for emergency food and cash distribution.

That very closely characterizes why I'm in GB: far enough away that in-laws cannot just pop in, but close enough so that when they do there is no good reason for them to spend the night. If it had not been Genesee County it would have been Lansing or Toledo.
